Thorndyke students will release at 12:45 p.m. on Early Release Wednesdays. Please see the complete calendar for all Early Release Wednesdays throughout the year.
New secure entrance doors
As you may know, a second set of doors was installed in the lobby at Thorndyke Elementary over spring break. After receiving feedback from the community and after conducting a safety assessment, we determined that these were necessary for the safety of our students and staff. When you visit Thorndyke, be sure to check in at the office if you are planning to walk to your child’s classroom. You will sign-in and you receive a “Visitor Pass” to wear while on campus. In the near future we will install an electronic buzzer that allows our office staff to open the doors from their desks. In the mean-time, thank you for your patience with this new process. Stay tuned for the updates.

Picking up and dropping off students: Please follow these rules!
As a staff, we are very concerned with the safety and welfare of students during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up. Many parents have also expressed their concerns. We have large numbers of cars driving into our very small lot. We must insist that parents follow our directives for driving students to and from the school.
- DO NOT LEAVE YOUR CAR UNATTENDED IN THE LOOP.
The biggest reason for parent frustration is cars parked in the no parking zone. It causes parents to drop students off in the traffic lane which is very unsafe. You must remain in your car and
pick your child up at the flagpole.
- DO NOT STOP IN THE THROUGH LANE.
If you can’t drive up to the curb, you need to wait until a space is available. Stopping in the through lane slows everyone down and is unsafe.
- DO NOT DROP STUDENTS OFF OR PICK THEM UP IN THE PARKING LOT.
Having students walk (or run) through the parking lot creates an unsafe situation. It also causes back-ups when cars want to exit instead of driving through the loop to pick up students appropriately.
- DO NOT BLOCK THE DRIVE EXITING THE PARKING LOT.
We have staff and visitors who need to leave the lot at 3 p.m. They need to be able to drive out safely.
- DO NOT HONK YOUR HORN!
Using your horn is not appropriate. When signaling children it disturbs everyone. When trying to get others to move , it creates anger and more frustration. Please model patience for our students.
When all parents follow the rules and guidelines, students are made more safe, and the process works smoothly. Even on days when we have high traffic, it never takes more than 10 minutes to disperse the majority of cars. Thank you for your attention to this, and for your help.
